Chief's 3 on 3 Basketball Tournament Another Success

Apr 03, 2012 14:37 ET

Twenty-eight teams and 112 youths from Grade 9 and 10 competed at the 5th annual Chief’s 3 on 3 Basketball Tournament hosted by DRPS Chief Constable Mike Ewles on Mar. 30. The tournament was created to reach out to youth from at-risk communities from across Durham Region, hoping to build new relationships and strengthen existing ones between young people and frontline police officers in a fun and relaxed atmosphere.

The tournament, hosted at UOIT in Oshawa, was a fun-filled day of competition and community involvement. Various community agencies, such as Eastview Boys & Girls Club, the YMCA and the AIDS Committee of Durham Region, who had information booths set up so the youths could learn more about their community.

There was some heated competition throughout the day with the boys team from Pine Ridge High School in Pickering and, for the second year in a row, the girls team from Notre Dame High School in Ajax emerging victorious.

Twelve lucky students also received certificates for a one-week basketball camp at Olympia Sports Camp in Huntsville. These athletes were chosen for showing great sportsmanship and teamwork throughout the tournament. Their Opportunity Minor Sports Corporation, a company created to provide families who can't afford to enroll their children in local sports programs the means to do so, also decided to sponsor one person from each of the winning teams. This will allow the recipients, Cheyenne and Chase, to participate in various sports activities in their communities.

Special thanks goes out to our sponsors, Police Appreciation Dinner and Awards Night Committee, Sharon Vander Duim Mortgage, The System Music Warehouse, Olympia Sports Camp, Little Caesars Bowmanville, Markol Distribution Ltd., DJ Raedar-Mike Rae, YMCA, DRPA, Hunter Boys, Suchan and Mc Quaid Financial and Their Opportunity because without their support, the tournament would not have been such an overwhelming success.

Congratulations to the tournament organizers, Csts. Brian Stewart and Janine Henderson, our members, the volunteers and the participants for a great day.

This annual event has more than tripled in size since its inception in 2008.
