Members Combine Fun and Fundraising for a Special Hockey Team

Apr 20, 2012 13:56 ET

Members of DRP took to the ice recently by hosting a charity hockey tournament to benefit the Durham Dragons Special Hockey Team, a team created for developmentally challenged individuals so special needs players get chance to participate in Canada's #1 sport.

Cst. Jason Bonner, an officer at Central East Division and member of the Durham Dusters, a police member’s hockey team, organized the tournament with the help of his father, a York Regional Police officer, his wife and his fellow officers. “My father suggested creating an emergency services hockey tournament in Durham Region and I thought it would be a great way to raise money to give to a local charity,” said Cst. Bonner. When Jason began his search for the charity, another member of DRP mentioned his neighbour was involved with the Durham Dragons and after attending an information session, he had found his charity.

“I met one of their organizers and we decided not only to host the tournament, but to also play exhibition games against them throughout the year. We haven’t beaten the Dragons yet but we give them a run for their money.”

This was the tournament’s second year and they raised $3,000 for the Dragons, almost doubling what they made in their first year. Several DRP police teams entered the tournament, along with teams from Toronto Police Service, York Regional Police Service, Ottawa Police Service and Durham College.
Congratulations to Cst. Bonner, his family, fellow officers and volunteers from Durham College’s Police Foundations Program who all made this tournament a great success.
