The DRP would like to invite youth in Durham Region to join in the celebration at the 4th annual Durham Pride Prom on May 4 at the Oshawa Golf & Curling Club. The Pride Prom was created for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgendered, and questioning (LGBTQ) youth aged 16-21, and their friends so they could celebrate the end of the school year in a safe and welcoming environment.
Community partners from the Durham Regional Police Service, the Ajax Youth Centre, the AIDS Committee of Durham Region, Boys and Girls Club of Durham, Community Development Council Durham, Durham Distress Centre, the Pinewood Centre of Lakeridge Health, the Durham College and UOIT LGBTQ Centre, and PFLAG (Canada) are pleased with how much the prom has grown since its inception.
“It’s important for our youth to know there are a lot of agencies out there that support them,” said DRP Diversity Cst. Keith Richards. “LGBTQ youth represent approximately half of the attendees and the rest are friends and family who want to celebrate with them, so it is genuinely an inclusive event.”
