Members of DRP, joined by policing partners from OPP, RCMP, OPG and our athletes and volunteers, completed the Law Enforcement Torch Run through Durham on June 22 when the “Flame of Hope” was carried through Pickering, Ajax, Whitby, Oshawa and Clarington.
While in Whitby, runners and supporters stopped at Regional Headquarters for a brief presentation thanking all who had participated. During the ceremony, Special Olympian Ryan Colpitts was pleased to present his cheque of $1,000 that he raised for the organization. Monetary donations were also made by Frank’s No Frills, Conroy’s No Frills and Councillor Ken Montague from the Town of Whitby.
Chief Mike Ewles, Deputy Chief Scott Burns and the Torch Run Executive Sponsor Giles le Riche were all there in support of the cause and were pleased with the overall success. “We had a great turn out for the 25th anniversary of the Torch Run,” said Giles le Riche. “I would like to thank all of the volunteers, athletes and runners for making it such a great success.”
Because of the money raised the Vipers, a Special Olympian team from Durham Region, were able to attend the Kingston Special Olympics Provincial Games for basketball. The Vipers took home 1st place, the first medal Durham has ever won for basketball.
Drinks and food were offered to organizers, volunteers, athletes and runners after the ceremony before the run continued on its way. DRP would like to thank all of the run’s many sponsors which are listed below.
