Ontario Police Memorial the Big Winner in 3rd Annual Golf Tournament

Aug 30, 2012 14:13 ET

More than 350 people picked up their golf clubs and opened their wallets, in support of the 3rd Annual Ontario Police Memorial Golf Tournament on Aug. 29 at Deer Creek in Ajax.

The Durham Regional Police and Tim Hortons partnered up to host the fundraiser, raising $34,000 for the Ontario Police Memorial Foundation. The foundation was created to honour Ontario police officers who lost their lives in the line of duty and a Ceremony of Remembrance is held at Queen’s Park on the first Sunday in May each year. The donation of $34,000 will be the largest single donation made to the memorial, beating the record $28,000 the tournament generated last year.

“For the third year in a row, your generosity has truly been amazing,” said Detective Constable Terry Rayner, co-organizer of the event. “Every year we set a goal and with everyone’s help, we surpassed it.”

The term “shotgun start” took on a new meaning when Chief Ewles and tournament organizers D/Cst. Terry Rayner and Wendy Brown, from Tim Hortons, fired a cannon to get the tournament started. It was a perfect day, as the golfers competed in longest drive, closest to the pin and putting competitions. There were even cars, a motorcycle and a hot tub on the line for the ever elusive hole in one contests, but they remained unclaimed. The winning foursome shot an amazing -15 and consisted of Dave Morrison, Brad Corner, Scott Young and Mike Hadden.

Special thanks go out to Wendy Brown and Durham Region Tim Hortons' franchisees, along with Detective Constable Terry Rayner, and the rest of the organizing committee, for all their hard work and dedication that brought this tournament to fruition. Also, without the support of all of the corporate sponsors, community partners and team of volunteers, the tournament would not have been the great success that it was.

Mark your calendars for next year’s event, which has been set for August 28, 2013. If you are interested in being a corporate sponsor or would like to book a foursome for the 4th annual tournament, please contact Terry Rayner at trayner@drps.ca.
