Bad Weather Doesn't Dampen the Special Olympic Spirit

Sep 21, 2012 12:00 ET

Despite the wind and rain, members of DRPS, Durham College and the community hit the links on Sep. 20 in support of Special Olympics.

The Special Olympics Committee, made up of DRPS and Durham College members, held the charity golf tournament at the Columbus Golf Course, where as a result of community support and the partnership of local sponsors, the committee was able to raise just over $17,000 for our Special Olympics athletes.

The annual tournament was created after the 2008 Special Olympics Spring Games were held here in Durham Region to demonstrate support for our athletes. It’s a unique event themed the “World Golf Tour.” Each hole represents a country, with competitions taking place at each hole. Golfers chose a country of their choice and the best dressed foursome was awarded with a prize for creativity.

All monies raised at the event goes towards sponsoring the Durham Region Special Olympics athletes who have qualified for provincial, national and international games. There are 547 registered athletes in Durham Region. Costs will cover many things including registration and uniforms.

Congratulations to everyone who participated and donated their time for this great cause.
