Nine Grade 5 students, representing Durham Region school boards, presented their winning essays on “What it is like to be a Police Officer” Sep. 27 at Regional Headquarters in front of a community judging panel and their families.

The judging panel was comprised of DRP Chief Mike Ewles and Deputy Chief Paul Martin, DRPS Police Services Board Executive Director Bill Clancy, DRPA Vice President Gary Foxwell, Debi McPhee from Scotiabank, Debra Hutchison from Rogers and Bonnie Fraser and Blair McArthur, members of the Police Appreciation Dinner and Awards Night Committee.

The nine students are DRP's new “Deputy Chiefs for the Day” and one lucky ten-year-old will be chosen as “Police Chief for a Day” and will fulfill those duties on Oct. 16, 2012. Also, in their position as Chief, the winner and two guests will attend the 10th Annual Police Appreciation Dinner and Awards Night on Oct. 18 at Deer Creek in Ajax to present their essay.

The Deputy Chiefs are: Natalie Hall from Orono Public School in Orono, Abby Zewdv from Vaughn Willard Public School in Pickering, Sinnan Ar Rafi from Dr. Roberta Bondar Public School in Ajax, Hunter Lovering from Sunderland Public School in Sunderland, Elizabeth Cronin from Lakewoods Public School in Oshawa, Kathleen Gale from John XX111 Catholic School in Oshawa, Paula Sojo from St. Bernard Catholic School in Whitby, Mackenzie Crawford-Eade from Meadowcrest Public School in Brooklyn and Abbey Cray from St. Mark the Evangelist Catholic School in Whitby.

All finalists did an outstanding job presenting their essays and are excellent representatives for their schools. The winner will be announced on October 1.

DRP congratulates to all the Deputy Chiefs on a great job!
