  Chief Kathleen Takes the Reins

Oct 17, 2012 12:21 ET

Durham Regional Police Chief Mike Ewles swore in a new Chief Constable on Oct. 16 at Regional Headquarters. Nine-year-old Kathleen Gale took her oath of office in front of her new staff members in Whitby. Kathleen earned her place as Chief for a Day when she read her essay in front of a panel of community judges late last month.

Chief Kathleen was picked up at John XX111 Catholic School and escorted to Regional Headquarters Tuesday morning where a Change of Command ceremony took place and she was sworn in as Durham Regional Police Chief for a Day. In the crowded boardroom, Chief Kathleen thanked everyone for the great opportunity and said she was excited about her day!

Chief Kathleen had a busy day as she visited various police units including the Forensic Identification Unit, the Central Cellblock, Communications and the Police Learning Centre. She also had the opportunity to inspect the DRPS motorcycles and the Collision Investigation vehicle. She completed her day with a ride in the police helicopter Air 1.

Our Chief for a Day will complete her duties when she reads her essay to a sold-out crowd of over 600 people on Oct. 18 during the 10th Annual Police Appreciation Dinner and Awards Night.

Great job Chief Kathleen!
