Nov 09, 2012 15:21 ET

Students from Dr. G J MacGillvray Public School helped kick off the 24th Annual DRPS Food and Toy Drive in Courtice. They were joined by DRPS Chief Mike Ewles, Deputy Chief Paul Martin, CAO Stan MacLellan, Chief for a Day Kathleen Gale, Food & Toy Drive Coordinator Cst. Paul Hawrychuk, members of DRPS, school officials, members of the community and of course Santa.

Tamara Cherry of CTV hosted the festivities and encouraged everyone to give generously this year to help those in need in our communities. DRPS Chief for a Day Kathleen Gale was also on hand to present Principal Monique Warren-Grybas and Vice Principal Patty Layne with a Food and Toy Drive jackets and a plaque to thank them for hosting. Chief Kathleen also asked that students and parents across Durham Region buy something for others when out shopping this Christmas.

Food and Toy Drive coordinator Cst. Paul Hawrychuk and DRPS auxiliary members and volunteers helped load up the vans to deliver all of the newly collected food and toys to families in Durham. Everyone in attendance was entertained by members of the DRP Heat band and by singing performances by the Grade 2, 3, 4 and 7 classes.

The Food and Toy Drive works with over 85 community agencies to deliver food and toys to thousands of families across Durham Region each year. Members of the community are encouraged to drop items off at local fire halls and police stations.
