  Working With Our Deaf or Hard of Hearing for Better Understanding

DRP teamed up with Durham Deaf Services to help foster a better understanding between officers and those who are deaf or hard of hearing.

Police visited their centre to help educate them about distracted and impaired driving and what to do if they are pulled over for a traffic infraction.

The main issue that was identified was the need to communicate with emergency responders about their level of hearing. Officers took the citizens outside to work through mock scenarios as to what would happen if they were pulled over. They were also shown how to use a radar gun and how to blow into an alcohol screening device.

Community members who are deaf or hard of hearing can sometimes struggle with being misunderstood and the information session allowed them to have crucial questions answered as well as provide them an opportunity to help educate police in how to effectively communicate with them.
