  Our Cops Hit the Shops

Feb 07, 2014 07:50 ET

Police officers and students shopped till they dropped thanks to the Pickering Town Centre.

The CopShop event saw Durham Regional Police and the Pickering Town Centre team up to help children complete their Christmas wish lists when they were each presented with a $200 gift card. Officers volunteered their time to be a personal shopper to one of 38 students, selected from different schools in Ajax and Pickering.

The children chosen for CopShop were recommended by a variety of sources and were selected because of need, recognition of specific academic or sports achievement or because of volunteer efforts that are making a difference in the community.

“Our officers look forward to CopShop every year” says Chief Constable, Mike Ewles. “It is a great opportunity for our officers to spend time with the kids and give back to the communities we work in every day.”

Everyone involved was treated to a lunch, hosted by East Side Mario’s, in order to fuel up for the day’s events. Even Santa stopped by to wish everyone a Merry Chirstmas.

The students impressed everyone with their generosity. Several students bought toys to donate to children in need.

The CopShop event in 2005 by the Halifax Shopping Centre and is taking place today in various locations in Alberta, Manitoba, Ontario and Nova Scotia. Approximately 300 children will participate in the CopShop event across Canada.
