St. Patrick’s Day R.I.D.E. Program Gets Results

Mar 18, 2013 13:10 ET

Over the weekend, the joint forces R.I.D.E. intiative between the Durham Regional Police Service, the Toronto Police Service and the OPP stopped more than 1,600 vehicles and a took a number of impaired drivers off the road.

The results of the weekend blitz include:

-1,625 vehicles stopped
-36 approved screening device tests administered
-7 individuals charged with Impaired/Exceed offences
-6 individuals received three-day licence suspensions
-1 PON issued for Novice Blood Alcohol above zero
-1 individual arrested for a Criminal Code offence: Drive Disqualified
-1 drug charge
-15 PONs issued for Highway Traffic Offences

While the message that drinking and driving is a serious criminal offence has gotten through to many residents, some still attempt to operate a vehicle while impaired. One offender during this R.I.D.E. program thought he was doing the right thing by driving three impaired passengers home--the problem was he didn’t have a driver’s licence and he was impaired himself.
