  Lucky Youth Receive New Hockey Equipment Through For Kicks Program

Feb 23, 2018 10:57 ET

Durham Regional Police officers attended The Firehouse Youth Centre in Bowmanville and surprised the youth with new street hockey equipment. The equipment was provided as part of the For KICKS program (Kids Involved with Cops and Community for Knowledge and Sport) which was launched in 2012 in Durham Region.

Funded by ProAction Cops & Kids, with additional assistance from the Police Appreciation Dinner and Awards Committee and other community partners, For KICKS is the largest youth program run by Durham Regional Police.

It provides free, organized sports to kids and youth from at-risk communities across the Region.

Participation in sports has proven to be crucial not only to a childs physical fitness, but to establishing a sense of self-esteem and well-being. The more time and effort invested in our children will increase the odds they will lead healthier, happier and more productive lives.

To date, hundreds of youth from across Durham Region have taken part in For KICKS programs, some of which have included;

- 2012 Damon Allen High School Quarterback Challenge
- Whitby/West Lynde After-School Soccer Program
- Pickering Soccer (with thanks to the Pickering Soccer Club)
- Darlington Soccer
- Blackstock youth/police open skate days
- Trip to Toronto Raptors vs. L.A. Lakers with box seats

In addition to the above programs, For KICKS runs several one-day sports clinics. These events are open to all youth within the communities.

With the recent partnership with the Bowmanville Firehouse, police officers will attend the centre to play sports, talk and engage with the youth on a regular basis.

These new partnerships and events provide our youth with the unique opportunity to interact with our officers in a positive and constructive environment. Through sport, we will be able to break down any preconceived negative ideas the youth may have about police, and build positive relationships with them.

Several exciting events are planned for the spring and summer seasons, and community members are encouraged to work with officers to provide these amazing opportunities for our youth. The future events will be posted on and Facebook.
