Two Durham Regional Police Officers were recognized Tuesday night for their efforts in getting drunk drivers off the road.
Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) Durham Chapter presented Csts. Julie Liard and Jamie McMaster with Officer of the Year Awards for their efforts in 2012.
Cst. Liard was an active member of the DRPS Festive R.I.D.E. team and charged 27 drivers during that campaign, including issuing 32 license suspensions. She had a 100 per cent conviction rate as the cases went through court. On the 2011 R.I.D.E. team, she charged 23 impaired drivers and issued 38 suspensions.
Cst. McMaster arrested nine impaired drivers and suspended three more during his routine patrol efforts in 2012. In October 2012 he successfully pulled over two impaired migrant workers driving a van in the Uxbridge area. Both were charged and convicted and one of the males blew two times the legal limit.
MADD Durham Chapter President Michelle Crabb thanked the award winners and also personally thanked all 14 officers on the recent Festive R.I.D.E. team for another outstanding campaign. They were Todd Gribbons (team leader), Darrin MacDuff, Al Ouellette, Jeff Bastien. Fraser Wannop, Julie Laird, Phil Steward, Simon Giguere, Ryan Mulrooney, Nick Nowak, Tom Broadfoot, Tim Wray, Scott Gordon and Ryan Edey. She thanked them for working the long cold nights and being away from their families during the holiday season.
Assistant Crown Attorney Kent Saliwonchyk was also recognized for his hard work, expertise and long hours invested in prosecuting drunk driving cases in Durham Region. He is considered one of the top lawyers in his field and greatly assists DRP members on the fine points of the law. Currently, 91 per cent of people arrested in the Festive RIDE campaigns in 2010 and 2011 have received convictions - the highest success rate in Ontario.
