Shredding Day Keeps Identity Thieves Away

Apr 16, 2013 11:30 ET

Do you have a box full of old paper receipts in your basement? Do you want to get rid of them in a safe and secure manner?

The Durham Regional Police Service is teaming up with Shred-it to offer a Shredding Day for citizens on Sat., Apr. 20 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at OLG Slots at Ajax Downs, Alexander’s Crossing and Hwy. 2, Ajax. In return for a small donation to the Law Enforcement Torch Run, you can bring a box full of old receipts, paid invoices, expired insurance statements and other personal papers and have them shredded before your eyes. Unfortunately at this time, Shred-it will not be accepting any discs, CDs or DVDs.

It’s a great way to prevent identity theft as it stops thieves from stealing your personal information if they break into your home or go through your recycling box.

An officer from DRP's Crime Prevention Unit will also be on hand to meet residents and answer any questions you may have about identity theft and how quickly someone can steal your identity.
