One of our civilian members was recognized by Oshawa Mayor John Henry for a decade of volunteerism at a recent Oshawa city council meeting.
Vanessa Micieli, a member of the Communications/911 Unit and the Volunteer Coordinator for DRPS, accepted a Recognition Certificate for her 10 years of dedicated service to PFLAG Durham Region. PFLAG stands for Parents, Friends and Families of Lesbians and Gays and is a national organization that assists the parents, families and friends of lesbians and gays who are dealing with issues regarding sexual orientation and gender identity.
Vanessa decided to become involved with PFLAG when her brother told her he was gay. Realizing the need for support in Durham Region, she has worked with PFLAG to visit schools and help educate youth and raise awareness so kids know they aren’t alone.
She has also volunteered her time for many DRP events, including the Durham Pride Parade and Toronto Pride Parade and at the annual PFLAG Gala that raises money for an LGBT Youth Leadership Camp held every summer.
Congratulations to Vanessa for her contribution to the community.
Visit the PFLAG website for more information about their organization.
