  Welcoming Eleven New Members

May 13, 2013 07:26 ET

After a six-month training program, 11 citizens have officially joined the Durham Regional Police Service’s Auxiliary Unit. At a ceremony held at Durham College, the new Auxiliary officers were sworn-in by His Worship Justice of the Peace Bob Boychyn. They were joined by one new Auxiliary officer for the Cobourg Police Service.

Durham Regional Police Deputy Chief Scott Burns, Superintendent Greg Mills and Cobourg Police Deputy Chief Terry Demill ,along with many other members of both services, were on hand to welcome the new recruits and thank them for their commitment to the police and the communities they serve.
Auxiliary Inspector Louise Elborn greeted the new members with words of encouragement and praise for their dedication to the community.

DRP’s 70 Auxiliary members share a passion for community service and volunteering, as well as an enthusiasm for policing. Working alongside sworn police officers, they assist with foot patrols, canvassing, search and rescues, R.I.D.E. programs, special events, marine patrols and emergency/disaster response.

All Auxiliary members must complete a Basic Auxiliary Training program, which includes use of force, firearms, pepper spray and defensive tactics, as well as the criminal code and powers of arrest. Qualifications for auxiliary recruits are similar to those of regular police officers.

They must be at least 18 years of age, possess a current CPR and First Aid certificate, and have no criminal record. Members are also expected to be physically and mentally able to perform the duties of an Auxiliary. Each officer commits to a minimum of 12 hours of service each month.

Formed in 1977, the Durham Regional Police Auxiliary Unit is celebrating 36 years of service to the community.

Please view our Auxiliary Unit home page for more information about the unit.
