  Police Week Underway

May 13, 2013 13:24 ET

Join the Durham Regional Police Service during the 2013 Police Week, at the Oshawa Centre. The DRPS display started on Sun., May 12 and will finish on Wed., May 15.

Community Safety Inspector Eva Reti, DRP Auxiliary Inspector Louise Elborn and our partners from the RCMP and OPP were on hand for an official ribbon cutting this morning.

“We encourage everyone – from adults to children – to come and see us this week.” said Insp. Reti. “Together with the RCMP and OPP, we have a lot of great information available, focusing on crime prevention and personal safety. It’s information everyone in the community can use.”

On May 13 the Masonic Chip Program will be running from 6 p.m. – 9 p.m. The program is free and for parents who would like to register their children. It involves taking digital pictures and fingerprints, filming a short video and collecting DNA samples to store on file so they can be accessed in an emergency.

On May 14, members will focus on cyber safety by showing examples of how quickly information can be gathered off the Internet.

Also, new Neighbourhood Crime Prevention Signs will be displayed in the mall. The signs will start appearing in neighbourhoods throughout Durham Region to remind residents that, by taking a few small safety measures, they can help safeguard their property.

Police Week in Ontario is an annual event dedicated to increasing crime prevention awareness and education for the public and recognition of the law enforcement efforts of all police services.
