The sixth annual Chiefs 3-on-3 basketball tournament was held at the Durham College/UOIT gym and crowned two championship teams from Ajax on May 29. In the girls division, the team representing Notre Dame defeated the team from J. Clarke Richardson. The boys division also featured an all Ajax final, as the team from Ajax High topped the team from J. Clarke Richardson.
Over 120 Grade 9 and 10 students from Notre Dame, J. Clark Richardson, Donald A. Wilson, Ajax High, G.L. Roberts, Paul Dwyer, Bowmanville High joined the DRPS mens and womens teams in the competition for the hardware.
The tournament is designed to bring together members of the DRPS and youth in a positive setting with basketball acting as the common connection for everyone involved.
Thanks go out to event sponsors the Police Annual Dinner and Awards Night, Dominos, Algoma Orchards, Lowes, Markcol Distribution, Vander Duim Mortgage Team, and to Olympia Sports Camp and the Toronto Raptors for donating prizes. Thank-yous are also extended to the community agencies that participated in the event; the City of Oshawa, City of Pickering, John Howard Society, the Youth Centre, the Refuge, PFLAG Durham, YMCA, Joannes House and the Durham Region Health Department.
Additionally, thanks go out to all of the dedicated volunteers who helped make this such a successful event and to Csts. Janine Henderson and Brian Stewart for organizing the day.
Congratulations to everyone involved and the DRPS is looking forward to the seventh annual tournament next spring.
