Cops and Kids Strike Up Some Fun

Jun 06, 2013 15:08 ET

DRPS members and local youths got together on June 5 for the fifth annual Bowling Extravaganza hosted by ProAction Cops & Kids, and held at NEB’s Fun World. Teams of youth and officers battled against one another for an opportunity to play against Chief Ewles’ team for the coveted trophy.

The championship game saw officers from Ajax/Pickering’s West Division take on Chief Ewles and his teammates Deputies Burns and Martin, CAO MacLellan and ProAction’s Chair Nancy Shaw, plus Stephen Burley from the Regional Works depot in Orono and Deputy Martin’s son, Miller.

“We were soundly defeated, but the bowlers from West Division resorted to some underhanded distraction techniques to throw us off our game,” the Chief joked of his teams defeat in the final game.

The event is designed as a fundraiser for ProAction, and is one the most important to the organization. It also provides an opportunity for youth, community members and police to participate in a friendly bowling tournament together. The setting allows for everyone involved to interact together and develop lasting relationships while having a fun night of bowling.

ProAction Cops & Kids is a not-for-profit organization design to help fund programs that are developed and run by police officers. ProAction strives to build better relationships between police and youth, break stereotypes, and improve community safety now and in the future. Since being established in 2007, the Durham chapter has reached over 3,000 young people.
