  Special Olympics Ontario Torch Run

The Special Olympics Ontario torch run made its way through North Durham on June 18. DRP members and community volunteers ran the “flame of hope” across the northern communities of our region in an effort to raise money and awareness for the Special Olympics. The North Torch Run raised $1,150 for Special Olympics.

Beginning at 9:00 a.m. at Beaverton Public School, the run will travelled south on Mara Road to Simcoe Street, before heading east on Simcoe street to York Street. In Cannington, the run will began at 10:00 a.m. and began at Albert Street and Cameron Street East, before concluding at the Cannington Foodland.

Sunderland’s run started at 11:00 a.m. at the Sunderland Public School on Albert Street, and wraped up at Pindar’s Service Station. Uxbridge runners got underway at 12:30 p.m. at 168 Brock Street West and travelled east to Marietta Road. The last portion of the run will took place in Port Perry at 1:30 p.m. at R.H. Cornish School. Travelling east down Queen Street to Vos Independent, approximately seven schools will join police and members of Community Living Durham during the run.

The South Durham portion of the torch run takes place on Thursday, June 20 with all runners beginning at 9:15 a.m. at the Pickering Town Centre. The run will travel across Hwy. 2 to Whitby, before heading North on Brock Street to Rossland Road and making its way to the Regional Headquarters (RHQ) at 605 Rossland Rd. East.

A short ceremony will take place at 12:00 p.m. where Special Olympians will be making a short speech about the run. The runners will then depart RHQ and pick the run up at Thornton Road and King Street in Oshawa, where the torch will make its way to members of Central East Division before continuing east through Durham on Hwy. 2 and concluding at the Bowmanville Zoo.
