South Torch Run Travels through Durham

Jun 20, 2013 15:40 ET

Members of DRP, joined by policing partners from OPP, RCMP, OPG and our athletes and volunteers, completed the Law Enforcement Torch Run through Durham on June 20 when the “Flame of Hope” was carried through Pickering, Ajax, Whitby, Oshawa and Clarington.

While in Whitby, runners and supporters stopped at Regional Headquarters for a brief presentation thanking all who had participated. During the ceremony, Special Olympian Ryan Colpitts was pleased to present his cheque of $1,000 that he raised for the organization. Monetary donations were also made by Frank’s No Frills, Conroy’s No Frills and Councillor Ken Montague from the Town of Whitby.

Chief Mike Ewles, Deputy Chief Scott Burns, CAO Stan MacLellan and the Torch Run Executive Sponsor Giles le Riche were all there in support of the cause and were pleased with the overall success. “We had a great turn out for our Torch Run,” said Giles le Riche. “I would like to thank all of the athletes, runners, sponsors and volunteers for making it such a great success.”

Many of the athletes running are competing at the Special Olympics upcoming summer games from July 11 – 14 and hosted by York Regional Police.

Drinks and food were offered to everyone involved, donated by TimeOut Express at Legends Centre Pizzaville, after the ceremony before the run continued on its way. DRP would like to thank all of the run’s many sponsors which are listed below.
