  Crime Prevention Initiative in Clarington

Jul 02, 2013 11:29 ET

Durham Regional Police Service East Division is rolling out an awareness campaign throughout the communities of Clarington. The initiative will utilize “A-frame” signs, which will be placed at the side of the street in various neighbourhoods, promoting that “Crime Prevention Starts with You."

The proactive initiative is a notice to citizens to secure their valuables, lock their doors, and report suspicious or criminal activity. Placement of the signs does not necessarily indicate an issue within your neighbourhood, but acts as a reminder that there are simple steps you can take to aid in crime prevention. The first signs will be placed in Courtice, and from week to week, will be moved to include all of our communities. In addition, Clarington communities will start seeing smaller, postcard-size signs, bearing a similar message, in the windows of participating stores and businesses. This mirrors our Regional Crime Prevention Unit's initiative that was launched during Police Week in May. Those signs can be seen across the region.

Another initiative starting in the fall of 2013 is a series of safety presentations which aims to raise awareness of crime prevention, and to help the community learn how to lower their risk of becoming a victim of crime. Dates and locations of these presentations will be posted on, Facebook and Twitter, closer to the fall.
