Annual Golf Tournament Tees Up Another Big Donation

Aug 29, 2013 12:32 ET

High temperatures equaled high donations yesterday at the 4th Annual Ontario Police Memorial Golf Tournament, where a whopping $41,000 was raised for the memorial foundation.

Besting last year’s record donation of $35,500, this year’s tournament, held at Deer Creek in Ajax, continues to show amazing support towards those officers who have been killed in the line of duty in Ontartio.

The tournament was created in 2010 by Durham Regional Police Constable Terry Rayner and Tim Hortons franchisee Wendy Brown to honour fallen officers through the Ontario Police Memorial Foundation. A Ceremony of Remembrance is held at Queen’s Park on the first Sunday in May each year. Including the money raised this year, the tournament has donated more than $115,000 to the foundation.

“I can’t believe the amazing support and generosity of everyone involved,” said Constable Terry Rayner, co-organizer of the event. “We manage to surpass our goal every year and we couldn’t do it without everyone doing their part to make it a success.”

The day started off with a bang, or more like a boom, when Chief Ewles, fired a cannon to get the tournament underway. It was a perfect day, as the golfers competed in longest drive, closest to the pin and putting competitions. There were even cars, a motorcycle and a hot tub on the line for the ever-elusive hole-in-one contests, but the prizes remained unclaimed. The winning foursome shot an amazing -14 and reclaimed their title from last year’s winners.

Special thanks go out to Wendy Brown and Durham Region Tim Hortons' franchisees, along with Detective Constable Terry Rayner, and the rest of the organizing committee, for all their hard work and dedication that brought this tournament to fruition. Also, without the support of all of the corporate sponsors, community partners, participants and team of volunteers, the tournament would not have been the great success that it was.

Mark your calendars for next year’s event, which has been set for August 27, 2014. If you are interested in being a corporate sponsor or would like to book a foursome for the 5th annual tournament, please contact Terry Rayner at trayner@drps.ca.
