Cst. Angela Sitaram, and members from the Herbert H. Carnegie Future ACES Foundation, helped the Durham Catholic District School Board launch its Safe and Caring Schools Week by introducing the Positive Ticketing Program in their schools.
Durham officers have been issuing “Tickets of Kindness” throughout the Region since Cst. Sitaram brought the program to Durham in December 2012. The program is based on the premise of police officers acknowledging young people in our schools and communities, caught in the act of demonstrating positive behaviour and good decision-making skills.
“It’s great to be able to reward kids for good behavior,” said Cst. Sitaram. “This program allows officers to have a positive first interaction with kids, so they will hopefully turn to us in the future when they have questions or need help.”
Thanks to community partners, included in the tickets are often gift certificates at local establishments such as Mac’s Milk Convenience Stores and McDonalds.
