  Another Amazing Children's Games!

Oct 29, 2013 09:10 ET

Even the rain couldn't dampen the atmosphere at the 29th Annual Durham Regional Police Service Children's Games. Approximately 60 athletes, and more than 200 DRP members, community partners, volunteers, family and friends, enjoyed the multi-sport event, held at the Pickering Recreation Centre.

The fun-filled and inspiring day started at 9:30 a.m. with opening ceremonies attended by senior officers including, Deputy Chiefs Scott Burns and Paul Martin, Superintendent Joe Maiorano, Inspector Jamie Grant, Police Services Board Member Bill McLean, DRPA Vice-President Gary Foxwell, Pickering Mayor Dave Ryan, politicians, volunteers and sworn, civilian and auxiliary members of DRPS.

Emceed by the 2012 Provincial Easter Seals Ambassador Brandon McAuley, outstanding athletes for 2012 Mikail Laing and Julia Gaidychuk joined the Deputy Chiefs for the official ribbon cutting to begin the games.

All the teams competed in various sports such as bowling, wheelchair soccer, hockey, golf and curling. Trophies and medallions were presented to all participants. Our top team of the day was Air 1, defeating the police, auxiliary and volunteers in wheelchair rugby. The Elizabeth Martin Memorial Award for top male and female performance were presented to Joshua MacDonald and Madison Bailey-Borges.

The event was hosted by Durham Regional Police Service members, volunteers, family and friends, and was a great demonstration of sportsmanship, teamwork and fun.

All of this is possible due to generous donations from the DRPS, the DRPA, the Senior Officers Association, the Durham Regional Police Services Board, private donors, and community organizations. The Games are designed to provide an inclusive and exciting sporting opportunity to children aged 6-18 years old, with a variety of physical limitations.

Thank you to those who made it possible and a big thank you to all of the athletes, who showed everyone what determination, team work and joy really mean. The committee would also like to extend their appreciation to the City of Pickering, DRP Services Board, DRP Senior Officer's Association, DRP Association, and the many community organizations that joined us this year to share their dream!
