  Officers Spread Some Holiday Cheer

Dec 19, 2013 14:42 ET

Constables Jen Kavanagh and Kayleen Browell, along with Central East Division’s Inspector Chris Ostler and S/Sgt. Steve Jones, visited ten schools in Oshawa today with some special gifts for staff and students. Each school received a large box of school supplies, dry goods for their breakfast programs and gifts for the children who may otherwise go without this holiday season.

Constables Kavanagh and Browell started gathering items about two months ago, starting with a $5,000 donation from Target for the school supplies. Then they solicited donations in any way they could, including Cst. Kavanagh’s mother who asked the guests at her annual holiday party to bring a toy donation to the festivities. Each school has a breakfast program and the Constables raised $500 to purchase supplies.

“We wanted to help make a difference in our community amongst the students that we deal with on a daily basis,” says Cst. Browell.

Earlier this week, S/Sgt Jim Griepsma and Constables Ryan Rayner and Terry Rayner attended the West Lyde Public School community to spread some cheer as well. West Lynde had conducted a clothing/food drive for families in need from their school. They had focused on 23 families that were in need.

The officers worked alongside them and purchased turkeys for each of these families as well as seven other families that were from the community. West Lynde’s Principal Brian Bradley and some of his staff joined the officers to deliver the donated items to the families.
