  UPDATE - Ice Storm Aftermath

Dec 23, 2013 14:00 ET

Durham Regional Police continue to assist the public in response to the ice storm that swept through southern Ontario on Dec. 22nd.

We continue to repond to power lines down as a result of ice or damage caused by trees. We also are sending officers to intersections where the power is still out. Please avoid downed wires and if you are driving, please slow down and drive according to road conditions. Cold temperatures are expected to continue for several days.

There are several warming centres available to residents who are still without power:

Ajax Community Centre, 75 Centennial Road
Garnet B. Rickard Recreation Complex, 2440 Hwy. 2 Bowmanville
Newcastle & District Recreation Complex, 1780 Rudell Rd, Newcastle
Oshawa Legends Centre, 1661 Harmony Road North
Pickering Recreation Complex, 1867 Valley Road

Also open and operating per normal are facilities in Whitby:

Brooklin Community Centre and Library, 8 Vipond Road
Iroquois Park Sports Centre (Whitby), 500 Victoria Street West
McKinney Centre (Whitby), McKinney Drive

Please call police if there is a safety danger regarding downed power lines and if you are driving today, please make sure your car windows are clear and you have lots of winshield wiper fluid. Please treat all intersections as four way stops if traffic signals are not working.

Our division buildings in Pickering and Bowmanville are operating on generators but are still open to the public. Our other stations have full power. Please contact your local power authority for information about power outage timeframe estimates. Visit the web sites of your local municipality for further information about local services available.
