The construction of the first phase of the new Clarington Police Complex on Highway 2 and Maple Grove Road is proceeding on schedule, despite the harsh weather conditions this winter. Phase 1 includes the new East Division and Forensic Identification Facility being built, while the plan for Phase 2 consists of a Regional Support Centre and a Centre for Investigative Excellence.
Phase 1 is well underway; the footings and foundation have been poured for East Division and scaffolding has been erected for the start of the masonry work. Steel and metal contractors worked diligently through the frigid temperatures so the project can meet its projected timelines.
The East Division building will be the home for officers patrolling the communities of Clarington, and will feature interview rooms, evidence storage, holding rooms, a Sally Port, a SOCO vehicle examination bay, a fitness room and locker rooms.
The Forensic Investigation Facility will offer state-of-the-art resources to receive and process evidence required in modern court proceedings. The space will include several specialized labs, some with pressured air-handling systems.
The Clarington Police Complex is scheduled for completion in 2015. The existing East Division building was constructed in 1986, and was identified as needing expansion or replacement in 2000.
