DRPS Receives Award in the Fight Against Human Trafficking

Jan 31, 2014 12:02 ET

Out of 32 police services across Canada, the Durham Regional Police Service was named the Agency of the Year for our efforts in combating Human Trafficking. Often referred to as sexual slavery, it is an issue that faces most communities, domestic and foreign, as women are forced to participate in the sex trade.

At the January 26 gala hosted by Walk With Me Canada Victim Service, Supt. Brian Osborne and Sgt. Ron Kapuscinski accepted the award for our organization. We are honoured to be recognized by Walk With Me Canada and will continue to reach out to the victims and help ensure they get the help they need, said Supt. Osborne. We will also continue to arrest and hold accountable the controllers who take advantage of these women.

Cst. Phil Groenveld was also on hand to accept an Officer of the Year Award as Emerging Leader for Combating Human Trafficking.

DRP was selected for the award based on results from an initiative focused on human trafficking at some local hotels. The result of the initiative led to the first-ever conviction for Human Trafficking in our region and positive relationships with the victims. Our team worked tirelessly to assist the victims and is grateful to receive the award for their efforts.

Two additional awards were presented at the gala. The Officer of the Year Award for Outstanding Advocacy for Victims of Human Trafficking and Outstanding Community Awareness in Anti-Human Trafficking were presented to Jimmy Zucchero of Peel Regional Police and Julianne Sorenson of the Ontario Provincial Police, respectively.
