  In Memory of Jim Flaherty

Apr 11, 2014 11:31 ET

On behalf of the Durham Regional Police Service, Chief Constable Mike Ewles would like to extend his deepest condolences to the family and friends of Whitby-Oshawa MP Jim Flaherty.

From 1995 to 2005, Jim was the provincial member of parliament for Whitby-Oshawa and was elected to a federal seat in 2006. Until March 2014, he served as Canada's Minister of Finance and Minister Responsible for the Greater Toronto Area. Additionally, he served as a Governor of the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund. He was one of Canada's longest serving finance minister when he stepped down on March 18.

"We are all deeply saddened by the loss of Jim Flaherty, a loss that will no doubt be felt right across the country," says DRPS Chief Mike Ewles.

His wife Christine Elliott represents Whitby-Oshawa as an MPP in the Ontario legislature.

"Jim and Christine have been long-time residents of our region and have made significant contributions to the health and prosperity of our citizens. They have both supported our annual Police Appreciation Dinner and Awards Night and countless other local charitable endeavours," the Chief says.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to Christine and their sons, John, Galen and Quinn, in this difficult time.
