Marking the one-month anniversary since the new fine for distracted driving came into effect, Durham officers were kept busy issuing 450 PONs from March 18 to April 18.
Distracted driving was a factor in 37 per cent of the fatal collisions in our region in 2013, and our officers are dedicated to safeguarding our roads by continuing enforcement initiatives. From January 1 to April 22, 2013 we issued 693 PONs for distracted driving, compared to the 1,805 so far in 2014. The DRPS Traffic Services Branch, along with support from our Divisions, will continue to run distracted driving blitzes to help ensure everyone travelling gets to and from their destinations safely.
We would like to remind all motorists in Durham Region that drivers are prohibited by law, from handling electronic devices while operating motor vehicles. Under the Highway Traffic Act, section 366/09, officers are exempt during the carriage of their duties.
Help do your part and put your devices away.
