Chief's 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament Hits the Court

May 02, 2014 19:53 ET

The seventh annual Chiefs 3-on-3 basketball tournament took place at Durham College/UOIT gym and 20 teams of young men and women battled it out for the trophy.

More than 120 Grade 9 and 10 students from Notre Dame, J. Clark Richardson, Ajax High, Paul Dwyer, Bowmanville High, and All Saints joined the DRPS men's and women's teams in the competition for the hardware.

Chief Ewles, Chief Designate Martin, CAO Stan MacLellan and MPP Joe Dickson were all on hand as the tournament kicked off with some tough matchups.

The tournament is designed to bring together members of the DRPS and youth in a positive setting with basketball acting as the common connection for everyone involved.

It was a great day with two teams emerging victorious. The girls’ team from J Clark Richardson came in first with Notre Dame and Bowmanville coming in second and third, respectively. For the boys’ side of the competition Notre Dame took first and third with J Clark Richardson placing second.
As a special bonus, two students were selected to win a week-long stay at Camp Olympia, a camp dedicated to both sports excellence and personal balance, after being chosen by the teachers, tournament organizers and fellow players. Jaclyn from J Clark Richardson and Nathan from Notre Dame took were chosen for this amazing opportunity.

Another great tournament comes to a close, and it couldn’t be such a big success without the dedicated committee members, community partners and volunteers. Great job to everyone involved and we look forward to next year’s event.
