During National Boat Safety Week, and as we move into the summer season, we need to remember to be extra cautious not only on our roadways, but on our waterways as well. The goal of this campaign is to remind Canadas 16 million boaters to be safe this season.
The top five key messages to remember while on your watercraft are: make sure all boaters wear a lifejacket, dont drink and boat, take a boating course, be prepared and be aware of the dangers of cold-water immersion.
We would like to remind the public that the same charges for impaired driving of a motor vehicle apply to impaired operation of a watercraft. MADD Canada reports there are 15 per cent more alcohol related deaths on water.
DRP ask that the public adhere by the key messages, so we can all have a happy and safe boating season.
