Durham High Schools Receive Youth Crime Prevention Grants

Jun 05, 2014 14:51 ET

Five high school leadership groups from across Durham received Youth Crime Prevention grants from the DRPS Police Appreciation Dinner & Awards committee (PADAN).

Leadership groups from Courtice Secondary School, Henry Street High School, Pickering High School, Port Perry High School and Sinclair Secondary School were in attendance at Regional Headquarters to accept their $1,000 grants from Chief Paul Martin and PADAN committee member Bonnie Fraser. The students also got the opportunity to openly discuss and present their crime prevention initiatives and achievements to DRP and PADAN committee members.

“We want to put the problem solving into the hands of the students,” said Cst. Mary Anne Karpis and former Youth Officer Co-ordinator. “Our hope is for the students to work collaboratively and to encourage responsibility, leadership and respect within themselves and their fellow students. I am very proud of these groups and would like to congratulate them on their accomplishments.”

The crime prevention initiatives were solely created by the youth for the youth. The groups focus on issues within their schools and communities. They touch on important topics such as anti-bullying, anti-violence, mental health, substance use and abuse, anger management, and fitness and nutrition. The grants will give the groups more freedom to perfect and spread their important messages.
