Aug 22, 2014 14:02 ET

The Durham Regional Police Service Youth In Policing (YIP) Program 2014 held its graduation ceremony at Eastdale Collegiate high school in Oshawa Thursday night.

A total of 60 YIP students, along with five Team Leader, three Supervisors and one Program Coordinator delivered an amazing graduation ceremony.

Chief Paul Martin was in attendance and delivered his message to the graduating youth. “One can’t help but be impressed by the young adults that were part of the YIP,” he said.

The graduating students displayed great musical talent and showed their team building spirit with YIP chants and encouraging support for each other.

The YIP students participated in several events during the eight weeks they spent together and some of the events included, the Ripple Effect Youth Forum, where over 400 youth from 10 police services attended. The topics covered included LGBTQ, Bullying, and what it means to be a leader.

Our students attended at the Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nations Pow Wow ceremony several weeks ago, where they learned about local traditions. They participated in a Community Garbage Clean Up by cleaning areas of garbage while interacting with members of the public. At the Junior Youth In Policing Camp, they mentored younger kids as every YIP was paired with a child aged 10 - 13 years of age.

The YIP students also built backpacks through car wash fundraisers. They raised over $1,000 to help buy school supplies for youth living in Durham Region who would not be able to afford these items by other means.

The also received certificates in First Aid, CPR, Harmony, Diversity Training, CALM and Highway Safety.

The Graduates were asked to move forward into the second phase of the YIP initiative which meant going back to their respective community and sharing all the wonderful leadership skills they learned during the eight weeks.

Congratulations to everyone that helped to make the summer a true success.
