  All Fore a Good Cause

Aug 29, 2014 11:40 ET

Even Mother Nature was supporting the 5th Annual Ontario Police Memorial Golf Tournament, as the favourable weather conditions held up and an astounding $43,000 was raised for the memorial foundation.

If you add the total from this year’s tournament, held at Deer Creek in Ajax, more than $161,000 has been donated in support of officers who have been killed in the line of duty in Ontartio.

The tournament was created in 2010 by Durham Regional Police Constable Terry Rayner and Tim Hortons franchisee Wendy Brown to honour fallen officers through the Ontario Police Memorial Foundation. A Ceremony of Remembrance is held at Queen’s Park on the first Sunday in May each year.

“Every year, I wonder if we can surpass last year’s total, but our sponsors and players always make it happen,” said Constable Terry Rayner, co-organizer of the event. “We couldn’t do this without everyone’s support and that's what makes this such a great day, for a great cause.”

It was a perfect day, as the golfers competed in longest drive, closest to the pin and putting competitions. There were even cars on the line for the ever-elusive hole-in-one contests, but no one drove away with the victory. There was a new winning foursome, comprised of Csts. Brad Harnum, Pat Jones, Aaron Rice and Jeff Smith, who shot an amazing -15 to claim the title.

Special thanks go out to Wendy Brown and Durham Region Tim Hortons' franchisees, along with Detective Constable Terry Rayner, and the rest of the organizing committee, for all the hard work and dedication that brought this tournament to fruition. Also, the ongoing cooperation and participation of our corporate sponsors, community partners, participants and team of volunteers, makes the tournament an amazing success every year.

Mark your calendars for next year’s event, which has been set for August 26, 2015. If you are interested in being a corporate sponsor or would like to book a foursome for the 6th annual tournament, please contact Terry Rayner at trayner@drps.ca.
