Retired police service dog Kane recently passed away on September 19, while at home, surrounded by his partner, Sergeant Dave Mounsteven, and his family.
Kane became active with DRP in the summer of 2005 and became the first dog trained in-house by the Durham Regional Police Service K-9 Unit. Partnered with then Detective Constable Dave Mounsteven, Kane was a general purpose dog, cross trained in narcotics and firearms detection.
Dave described Kane as a tough, street dog, who never backed down from any incident. Kane was focused on his job and worked “like a machine”, but when he was off duty, he changed gears and was a great dog who loved his family.
In 2009, Dave and Kane were honoured, alongside D/Cst. Dunlop and K-9 Magnum, for saving the life of a missing 83-year-old male. The officers were dispatched, early on the bitterly cold morning of February 19. The male had been missing for more than 16 hours.
Approximately two hours into the search, the dogs indicated the presence of human scent in an area north of a small pond. The dogs led the handlers through dense brush to a small clearing where they located the missing man lying on the frozen ground beneath a tree. The K-9 handlers immediately called in the location as the male was breathing, but not responsive, and was extremely cold to the touch. He was almost completely covered by snow. Our officers used their own clothing to cover the male and used their warm hands to protect his frozen ears and fingers. The male was transported to a local hospital in critical condition. While at the hospital, officers were advised that the male had a core body temperature of 20 degrees, a serious condition, as temperatures of 30 degrees or less are usually fatal.
After a lengthy stay in hospital, the man recovered from his ordeal and later attended our Regional Headquarters to express his appreciation for the outstanding efforts of our two K-9 teams, who undoubtedly saved his life.
Kane retired on March 15, 2009, when Dave was promoted to Sergeant and left the K-9 Unit.
Our condolences go out to Sgt. Mounsteven and his family on the loss of an important member of their family.
Kane’s name will be added to the K-9 memorial that was created in 2009, to honour these important members of our service.
