Eight New Deputy Chiefs Impress Our Judges

Oct 04, 2014 23:44 ET

Today, we had the privilege of meeting eight outstanding Grade 5 students as they competed in our essay contest to be our next Chief For a Day!

Each student, selected from hundreds of submissions, served as a Deputy Chief on September 26 and wowed the panel of community judges with their thoughts and ideas about policing. Helping the community, bullying, texting and driving and being a good role model were just some of the topics the students touch on.

Our Police Appreciation Dinner and Awards Night Committee (PADAN) was excited to start the competition for the new Chief, who will serve as Chief on October 21 and deliver the winning essay at the 12th annual PADAN event on October 23. Committee member Bob Pinkney was joined by Chief Paul Martin, DRPSB Executive Director Bill Clancy, DRPA member Colin Goodwin, DRPS Executive Assistant Donna Mavor, and Connie Cameron from Scotiabank, the Gold Braid Sponsor for the event.

Chief Martin was impressed with all of the essays and joked, “I might have the shortest tenure as Chief in the history of the Service with these excellent candidates.”
Joined by their parents, siblings and their very own police escorts, the eight Deputy Chiefs finished off their day by seeing a demonstration from Detective Constable Bryan Armstrong and K-9 Vegas.

The next Chief for a Day will be announced on Monday, September 29 when Chief Martin attends the lucky winner’s school to name his replacement.

Congratulations to all of our Deputy Chiefs! We are very proud to have you representing the Durham Regional Police Service!
