Oct 04, 2014 23:13 ET

More than 70 DRPS members joined thousands on Parliament Hill in Ottawa this weekend to mark the 37th Annual Canadian Police and Peace Officers Memorial. The annual memorial honours the over 840 Canadian police and peace officers who have made the ultimate sacrifice.

This year the names of five fallen officers were added to the memorial wall:

Constable Douglas J. Larche – RCMP (Moncton, N.B.)
Constable Dave J. Ross – RCMP (Moncton, N.B.)
Constable Fabrice G. Gevaudan – RCMP (Moncton, N.B.)
Constable John Zivcic – Toronto Police Service
Conservation Officer Justin A. Knackstedt – Saskatchewan Ministry of Environment.

Four historical officers were also remembered:

Constable James Urquhart – CP Police Vancouver – 1930
Constable Robert G. MacIntosh – CP Police Calgary – 1912
Senior Jailer George O. Leech - Essex County Jaiil – 1884
Constable Charles Richards - Niagara Village Police – 1854

This year marked the first official memorial for Chief Paul Martin marching as DRPS Chief of Police. It was also the last official memorial for Deputy Chief Scott Burns who retires later this year, and Inspector Charlie Green who retires in the spring.

The names of the nine officers were etched on the glass panels along the perimeter wall adjacent to the Memorial Pavilion. This pavilion overlooks the Ottawa River and serves as a lasting tribute to the sacrifice of these brave officers. “They are our Heroes, We Shall Not Forget Them.”
