A new video has been produced in support of I Am Who I Am, an anti-bullying campaign created by Pickering students and support by the DRP rock band The Heat after the tragic suicide of 11-year-old Mitchell Wilson.
The video, produced by Pine Ridge Secondary School students as part of the Proud of Pickering campaign, features the DRPS rock band The Heat, which penned a song by the same name. Lead singer Const. Scott Dargie and The Heat band performed the song and helped unveil the new video on Oct. 6th at the Durham District School Board headquarters.
Mitchell Wilson was a young man with muscular dystrophy who suffered years of anxiety and a feeling that he didn't belong. He committed suicide in September 2011 after being bullied.
In the aftermath, students from his school led an acceptance and inclusiveness initiative. It was supported by The Heat, which produced a CD of anti-bullying songs, including the title track - I Am Who I Am.
The campaign continues to raise awareness and has generated about $20,000 in donations through the sale of wristbands and T-shirts.
