Educator and author Dr. Jackson Katz joined members of DRPS, Victim Services and the community to preview a talk on the role of men in preventing gender violence.
On October 29, 2014, Dr. Katz will conduct an interactive training and talk, bringing together local agencies and community members to discuss a plan surrounding effective gender violence prevention in Durham Region. During a sneak preview to the day-long training, Dr. Katz spoke about the importance of recognizing gender violence as a connection to many social issues including violence against women and men, child abuse, sexual abuse, bullying and gang violence.
He says part of the solution is changing the way we think of gender violence by changing the language we use when describing it. He also emphasized the need to open up discussions with men and boys and encourage them to be leaders in prevention movements women have traditionally led.
The event is supported by DRPS and The Violence Prevention Coordinating Council of Durham. It takes place October 29 at The Jubilee Pavilion in Oshawa starting at 8:30 a.m. Please see attached poster for more information.
