It's a program thats cleared over 3,700 cases in Durham Region and is credited with over 3,600 arrests. It has been responsible for removing over $74 million worth of drugs off our streets and for recovering over $7 million in stolen property.
Durham Regional Crime Stoppers has an impressive track record and remains an active and important community safety option in this its 29th year of operation.
Twelve volunteer board members from the community operate the program and fundraise for the tip rewards that are paid out. The key to the effectiveness of Durham Regional Crime Stoppers is the successful partnerships it fosters in the community. Working together with the public, the media and police, Crime Stoppers endeavours to make a positive difference in our communities.
Crime Stoppers is a non-profit, non-police organization that pays cash for anonymous tips. The program encourages the public to communicate information regarding illegal activity. Crime Stoppers will share this information with the police or other agencies to assist in their investigations.
When citizens contact the Crime Stoppers program, they are assigned a special code number, which is used to identify them in all future dealings with the Crime Stoppers program. These citizens will only be known by their code number. If the information provided leads to a charge or an arrest, the tipster may be eligible for a cash reward of up to $2,000.
