Members of DRPS were on hand for PFLAGs 5th Annual Gala Ball in Whitby this weekend, where Inspector George Dmytruk was honoured as a champion in the community.
PFLAG (Parents and Friends of Lesbians and Gays) Durham Region provides support, education and resources on issues of sexual orientation and gender identity/expressions for gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, transsexual, two-spirit, intersex, queer, and questioning persons and their families and friends. DRPS has been a long-time supporter of the organization.
At Saturdays Gala, representatives of PFLAG presented Central East Division Insp. Dmytruk with the award, thanking him for his commitment to the organization and what it stands for. Over the past year Insp. Dmytruk and members of Central East Division have participated in several initiatives including marching in the Durham Pride Parade, participating in the PFLAG Bowling Fundraiser and the PFLAG/YWCA/Durham Rape Crisis Centre walk, "Take Back the Night."
Central East Division members also attended "A Night of Hope" where the DRPS anti-bullying cruiser was proudly displayed. This event honoured the memory of the many LGBTQ members that had taken their own lives. The night was moving for all and solidified the DRPS commitment in supporting members of the LGBTQ community.
Congratulations to Insp. Dmytruk and members of Central East Division.
PFLAGs peer-to-peer support teams are available by phone or email to talk with you about your own sexuality/gender expressions or the gender/sexuality of members of your family or friends.
