Members of DRPS joined employees from the Region of Durham on memorable day learning about the rich diversity of our growing community.
The 5th Annual Diversity In Our Community event gives regional employees the opportunity to educate themselves about the diversity that can be found right across Durham Region.
The day consisted of a visit to Grandview Childrens Centre and the Oshawa Senior Citizens Centre, where members toured the facilities and learned about programming. The group also visited St. Johns Ukrainian Orthodox Church in Oshawa where they learned about the Ukrainian community in Durham Region and various community organizations and faith groups.
The group returned to Regional Headquarters in Whitby where they heard from motivational speaker and former Special Olympic athlete Robert Pio Hajja. Born with Down Syndrome, Robert is a champion for those with intellectual disabilities. He spoke about the fact that everyone has a contribution to make in the world, despite any disability. The group also heard from Gabriel Shiu of the Abilities Centre who spoke about the upcoming Parapan American Games.
This annual event is designed to foster a broader understanding and respect of different faiths, lifestyles and cultures in our region.
