This was overheard in the gym at Bobby Orr Public School in Oshawa on April 23rd at the 2nd Annual Gowns for Girls Event.
A total of 238 young women attended the small gym in hopes of finding the perfect dress for the Grad or the Prom and they left with bags full of prizes, including shoes, costume jewelry and gift certificates for hair and make up.
The idea came from the kind of heart of Cst. Joylene MacNeil, who found out last year that several girls couldn't go to their Prom because of the pricetag. Many Prom dresses can cost over $400 and when you add matching shoes, a purse and jewelry, the milestone event in many teenager's lives is unaffordable.
Last year, over 350 dresses were donated and 75 young ladies found the perfect dress. This year, organizers were overwhelmed with the response - over 1,000 dresses were donated by local citizens and businesses and about 200 teenagers went home happy.
The next Gown for Girls event takes place on Thursday, April 30, 2015, from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. at Da Vinci Public School (61 Williamson Drive East, Ajax).
But because of the tremendous response on April 23rd, we are now short on shoes and purses to go along with the remaining inventory of dresses.
If you would like to donate, please contact Constable Joylene MacNeil at email@example.com or D/Sgt. Catherine Bawden at firstname.lastname@example.org.
The DRPS would like to thank all of the volunteers who pitched in and especially to all of the generous citizens and businesses who donated so many beautiful outfits and accessories for this annual event.
