The Tax Man Does Not Cometh

Jul 29, 2015 15:22 ET

DRPS would like to warn residents about an increase in reports of a telephone scam from someone who says they are from the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA). The scammer leads the resident to believe they owe back taxes and must pay immediately.

Last week in North Division, three separate cases were reported. One scammer even called a potential victim multiple times and became very aggressive. Thankfully, no one fell victim in these incidences. Sometimes the scammer asks for the money to be loaded on a prepaid credit card or other times they ask for a wire transfer.

The public needs to be aware that the CRA would never call and ask for payment in this matter. In fact, no reputable company or organization will advise you to make payments with pre-paid credit cards. Fraudsters will go to great lengths to convince you the agency is real, including the use of 1-800 numbers, realistic websites and even receptionists to answer the phone. If you receive such a call, hang up and report the call to police (888-579-1520) or the Canadian Anti- Fraud Centre (888-495-8501).
