Motorists Asked To Use Patience In Construction Zones

Aug 06, 2015 10:46 ET

It has been a busy season for road construction in Durham Region this summer and DRPS is asking motorists to be patient as it continues into the fall.

Officers are reminding drivers of the importance of driving carefully in construction zones. Fines are doubled and speeding through these areas can put the construction workers at risk.

Earlier this week, officers were called to the construction zone at Brock Road and Hwy. 401 in Pickering. In the span of 90 minutes, three motor vehicle collisions were reported.

Two of the collisions were minor, but the third one sent one male on a motorcycle to hospital with multiple injuries. The 50-year-old Pickering male was struck from behind by a vehicle in the construction area and was taken to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The Region of Durham is working hard to keep construction zones safe and reminds residents not to move or obstruct barriers or pylons as they are there for a reason. Its particularly important to have these barriers up at night, especially when there are no workers present.

The road construction is particularly heavy along the 407 and Highway 7 corridor as expansion continues and DRPS would like to thank residents for their ongoing patience.
