"In The Zone" Campaign Underway This Week

Sep 08, 2015 13:20 ET

Officers will be targeting school zones this week to remind drivers to slow down and pay attention to the roads as students are headed back to school.

The DRPS Traffic Services Branch, in conjunction with officers from all Divisions, will initiate a zero-tolerance traffic enforcement campaign targeting school and community zones from Tuesday, September 8, to Friday, September 11, 2015.

Last year's campaign resulted in more than 1,200 provincial offence notices issued to drivers for various infractions, including 787 tickets for speeding, and stopped one driver found travelling at 110 km/h in a 50 km/h zone in Oshawa. There were also 76 notices for distracted driving offences.

Drivers are reminded to slow down and put down their electronic devices while driving at all times and be aware of increased pedestrian activity around schools with classes back in session next week.

The goal of the annual enforcement campaign is to ensure high officer visibility and proactive enforcement in and around school zones during the first week of school.
