  31st Annual Children's Games A Huge Success

Oct 24, 2015 15:29 ET

Athletes and their families gathered in Pickering October 24 for a fun-filled day of friendly competition enjoyed by all.

The 31st Annual Children's Games took place at the Pickering Recreation Centre, where children with physical disabilities took part in a number of sports including golf, curling, basketball and bowling, just to name a few.

The day opened with a donation of pop tabs to the March of Dimes. Members of the community filled the DRPS anti-bullying cruiser with pop tabs, and proceeds will go toward building two skate horses for the arenas at the Pickering Recreation Centre. The skate horses will assist kids with disabilities as they take to the ice.

The dignitaries and athletes were then piped in to the opening ceremonies where they heard from a panel of guests before cutting the ribbon to kick off the festivities.

DRPS Superintendent Kim Bulloch and Pickering Mayor Dave Ryan welcomed the group and wished them lots of luck. Inspectors Bruce Townley and Jeff Friend were also in attendance, along with several local representatives and DRPS members. Thanks to the organizers of the games and our Auxiliary members who always play a large part in making the games such a huge success.

Each year 50-100 kids attend the games with their families and guardians to participate. The spirit and sportsmanship of all athletes is recognized through the awarding of medals and trophies and everyone enjoys a pizza lunch served by DRPS members and local volunteers.

Back in 1985, DRPS Cst. Stu Giffin proposed his vision to host an annual sporting event for children, between the ages of six and 16, with various physical disabilities. With the support of local volunteers; Police Chief of the day, Jon Jenkins; and the Mayor of Pickering, Jack Anderson; Cst. Giffin saw his vision come to life. The Pickering Recreation Centre is still hosting the annual event 31 years later.
